Central laboratory for Food and Nutrition

The central laboratory for nutrition aims to provide its facilities and experience in the field of biochemical analysis for food and nutrients. The laboratory is highly equipped with several instruments that are well fitted for food analysis such as atomic absorption spectroscopy, Khjaldal apparatus, spectrophotometers, HPLC, GC-MS and ELISA reader. The process of analysis includes determination of multiple parameters if food samples such as total carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamin and minerals. In addition much other analysis can be estimated such as pesticides, hormones, pharmaceuticals, food additives and some pollutants. The laboratory affords its services in very reasonable rates for both researchers and community.

Instrument function

Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometers

They determine the type and quantity of metals whether they exists in natural form or they add in food processing or as pollutants

Khjeldal apparatus

Khjeldal apparatus works by digesting food in order to determine the total protein in food in two stages

Spectrophotometers

Determines total carbohydrates and total fats in food

HPLC

After sample preparation, this system works by determining numbers of vitamins, each one individually. Also, it can determine the food pollutants such as peptide hormones, drugs and food additives.

GC-MS

It works by determining essential and non-essential fatty acids. Also, it can determines all types of pesticides and herbicides depending on sample preparation. It can also determines steroids hormones whether it exists naturally in food or added during food processing and /or treatment
